Getting a testosterone test on the NHS
How testosterone testing works on the NHS — free, symptom-gated, and slower.
Getting the test
- GP appointment. Describe symptoms plainly (the symptom guide lists them) and ask directly for morning testosterone bloods.
- Two morning draws. NHS labs run the same two-test logic; results typically within a week.
- The threshold reality. Many NHS labs act below 8–12 nmol/L; with results above the local threshold but symptoms present, ask what else could explain it (sleep apnoea, thyroid, mood) — see the misdiagnosis engine list.
- Referral. Above-threshold-but-symptomatic men commonly face the endocrinology referral queue (months, per clinic and patient-group reports).
What the NHS does not do
- Private-style "optimisation" for normal-range results.
- Same-week private-style titration without referral.
The honest comparison
NHS route: free, safe, slow, conservative thresholds. Private: fast, wider thresholds (clinics assess at 12 nmol/L), £59.99–£189/month (price registry). Many men do both: NHS bloods first (free evidence), then choose.
